Faultline Ultra 2025

April 24th - 27th, 2025
Wellington NZ

Welcome to the Faultline Ultra Volunteer Crew! We look forward to you joining us for event week :)

If you want the TLDR to make a quick desicion:

The course is split into Zones (A, B, C, D), all marshals have a zone code and number. That code is used on the map to find the exact location.

  • Zone A = Paekakariki, Akatarawas
  • Zone B = Hutt River trail, Belmont, Cannons Creek, Porirua
  • Zone C = Porirua, Johnsonville Skyline through to Karori, including Makara Peak MTB park
  • Zone D = Karori, Southern Suburbs to the finish.

Bikes - Saturday only. 100km, 100mile runners - Saturday and Sunday. 50km and 24km runners - Sunday only.

To deliver an event like this, there are many different tasks and roles to be completed over the week. All positions are listed here, including shift date and time.  If you are most interested in seeing/supporting Mountain Bike athletes, look for shifts on Saturday, before 9pm. Runners will be on course both days. Check out https://faultline.co.nz/ for all events schedules and maps if you want to choose your volunteer role based on a specific event.

Each role has a link to our information portal, where you can read all the details if you're not familiar with volunteering at Faultline. As an overview the roles that will be available are listed below. If you don't see a shift for the role you are keen on, come back in a few days... we are loading all roles in as fast as we can!

Course Marshals:

  • Locations all over the course between Paekakariki and Wellington CBD
  • Cheer on athletes, celebrate their epic achievements
  • Help keep other path and trail users safe by letting them know about the event

Aid Stations:

  • Play a vital part in the athletes fueling and hydration
  • Bring your energy and enthusiasm to your aid station - dress ups and themes encouraged!
  • A small team at each aid station to help keep athletes moving along on their journey

Zone Leaders:

  • Anyone who loves logistics, communication, and supporting a team of volunteers
  • Great for anyone interested in event management
  • Support the volunteers on course, organise people and delegate tasks

Zone Drivers:

  • Support aid stations, hubs, race control, and operations
  • Picking up, delivering, transferring - you'll be helping move equipment, food, supplies, and the occasional DNF'd athlete (Did Not Finish)
  • You MUST have a full clean drivers license, be over the age of 25 years, and ability to lift up to 30kg into and out of a van.

Event Village Set Up:

  • Skip the gym, and join the team for some light construction!
  • Be part of bringing the event village to life - setting up the finish tower, dressing the village with mesh and flags
  • Moving equipment, setting up signage, running cables, and just getting stuff done!

Event Expo / Athlete Check in:

  • Be the welcoming face of Faultline, meeting and supporting athletes through the check in process
  • Help out on gear check to ensure the athletes have everything they need to keep themselves safe on course
  • Help with merchandise, athlete bag drops, general support around the event expo

"Leave no trace" Crew:

  • Bring your passion for protecting the planet
  • Provide advice for bin-users to know which bin is right for them
  • Keep our event village looking slick, and making sure we leave no trace

Finish Line Crew:

  • Expect sweaty hugs, high emotions, epic finish moments, and a sore face from smiling non-stop.
  • Welcome athletes home after their epic journey, present their medal, and guide them into the post-event care area.
  • Sorting drop bags, managing pedestrian traffic around the finish chute, and sharing magic moments with proud spectators.

Start Line Crew:

  • Welcoming athletes as they arrive on busses, or directing them to parking and start areas
  • Support the Race Director and Course Director in setting the athletes off into their adventures
  • Moving between start locations, assisting with information for athletes and spectators at each event start

Course Marking / Course Clearing:

  • In the week before the event, heading out on the trails and marking a designated section of the course
  • During event weekend as course sections are cleared and closed, collecting course markings on a designated section, and returning items to hubs or Event HQ.
  • Reasonable fitness required - sections will be ~10km or more, you will need capacity to collect carry small core-flute arrows and marking tape - all of these are light but bulky.

Tail end Charlies (TEC's):

  • Following the last athlete, you'll cover a designated section of the course to ensure no athletes remain on course.
  • Change over locations at hubs or aid stations for convenience when waiting for change over
  • HIGH level of fitness required - you will need to carry your own mandatory equipment, plus additional emergency supplies and a radio (supplied). Time on feet could be a lot longer than you think, so you must be prepared for a long shift. (Even if you get a small section, e.g. 10km, you might be escorting an injured runner to their next aid location which could be very slow progress.)

Please look at the map of all locations click here (or on the map below) - each location has a "Zone" and Code - these are used in the position list below so you know exactly what you're signing up for.
